Educating Future Leaders – Insurance Literacy for Teens through the Okwelians Program
Fostering Insurance Awareness in Cameroon’s Youth
On April 12, 2025, something special happened in Douala. InsureTalk joined forces with The Okwelians Teen’s Program for Excellence to introduce teenagers to a topic that’s often overlooked, yet absolutely essential: insurance.
At first glance, insurance might seem like a subject reserved for adults, but we believe the conversation should start much earlier. That’s why we were thrilled to be part of this visionary initiative, which is all about shaping future leaders through values like ethics, civic engagement, and financial awareness.
Why Speak to Teens About Insurance?
Because they are not just tomorrow’s policyholders they are tomorrow’s innovators,
entrepreneurs, and decision-makers. And yet, most young people grow up without a clear
understanding of how insurance works or why it matters.
We want to change that.
By weaving insurance literacy into The Okwelians Teens program, we’re helping young minds grasp powerful concepts like risk, protection, savings, and mutual support. It’s about giving them the tools to make confident, informed choices throughout their lives.
What We Shared
Our session with the students was anything but a typical lecture. We designed it to be interactive, engaging, and grounded in real life. With storytelling, group discussions, and relatable examples, we explored:
– How insurance plays a role in daily life
– The ways it supports families, businesses, and communities
– The exciting and diverse careers available in the insurance industry
One of the most rewarding moments? Seeing students light up with curiosity—asking insightful questions, sharing personal stories, and realizing that insurance isn’t just a product.
It’s a promise. A safety net. A pathway to resilience.
Planting Seeds for a Safer Future
This wasn’t just a talk. It was a mindset shift. When young people understand how to protect what matters, they begin to see the value in planning ahead and supporting each other. That’s how we build stronger families, stronger communities, and ultimately, a stronger nation.
